Puti maach is a very tasty fish in small fish catagory. But I am not sure whether its available outside bengal or not. Generally puti fishes are of 2 types. Small one and large one. We used to call them shar puti (Large one).

Today I will post a shar puti recipe we generally have at our home. A very simple but a tasty one. A perfect combo with steamed basmati rice.

What do you need to make Puti Maacher Jhal

3-4 puti fish cut into 2/3 pieces. You can also keep it in full size.
2 big Onions finely Chopped
Fresh coriander leaves finely chopped
1/2 tsp kaala jeera
2-3 green chilis slited
1/2 tsp Jeera powder
1/2 tsp Dhania powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp chili powder
Salt to taste
Pinch of sugar
Mustard oil

How to make Puti Maacher Jhal

Wash the fish pieces properly.
Marinate them with turmeric powder & salt.
You can also add spices in marination, in that case keep it in refrigerator for 30 min atleast.

Now heat oil in a pan and fry the fish pieces one by one.
To fry the fish properly its better to heat the oil properly, otherwise fish might stick to pan and chances of breaking the fish.
Otherwise use a non stick pan.
Anyway, fry the fish pieces well and keep them aside.

Now add kala jeera to oil and stir for 1 min.
Then add chopped onions & green chilis.
Fry them till they turn golden brown.
Now add all the spices one by one and mix them all.
Add salt as per taste & a pinch of sugar.
Now add little water so that onions & spices mixes properly.
Finally add fish pieces and mix them all.
Add coriander leaves & cook for 2-3 min with covering the lid.

Serve hot with steamed rice. Hot & spicy combo.
