Daler Borar Jhol Recipe – Curry with Crispy Dal Pakoras

Masoor Daler Bora is a hot favorite recipe among all Bengalees. Mostly in rainy season or in winter we prepare this delicious pakoras at home.  Its another form – masor daler borar jhol recipe (pakoras cooked in a thick gravy) is equally famous to have with steamed rice.  My aunt makes it the best. Whenever I visit there house I always insist to prepare this delicacy. Today I am going to share this daler borar jhol recipe with you.

Ingredients for Masoor Daler Borar Jhol

For the Pakoras:
1/2 cup masoor dal(soaked for 1-2 hours)
1 medium size onion finely chopped 
2-3 green chillies chopped
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
Salt as required

For gravy:

1 big potato cut in cubical shape
1/2 tsp ginger paste
1/2 tsp jeera powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp chilli powder
Panch Phoron (Bengali 5 spices)
1 bay leaf
1 Red Chilli
1/2 tsp Garam Masala Powder
Salt to tase
Pinch of sugar
Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing(optional)

How to Prepare Masoor Daler Borar Jhol

  • First of all grind the soaked dal in a fine paste.
  • Now add chopped onions, chili, salt & turmeric powder in that. Mix them well.

Frying the Bora

  • Now make small balls from them.Heat oil in a pan and deep fry the balls. Fry them till they turn light brown.

Fried Boras

  • Take them out of oil & keep aside in a tray over a tracing paper so that the extra oil get soaked.
  • Now for the gravy fry the potato cubes in a pan and keep them aside. In that pan pour little more oil.

Panchphoron, Bayleaf & Red Chilli in Oil

  • Now add the bay leaf, red chilli, panch phoron into the oil & let them sputter.
  • Now add the fried potatoes, ginger paste, jeera powder, turmeric powder, chilli powder & salt to taste.

Frying Potato Cubes

  • Fry for 2-3 min & add water as required.
  • Add pinch of sugar.It will be a thick gravy. Cover the pan and cook for 5 min.
  • Now add the pakoras & the garam masala powder. Cook more for 3-4 min.
  • Serve with roti, paratha or plain rice.
