Chitol maach or Clown Knifefish is another popular fish in bengal. Its a very tasty fish. Chital maacher muthia is a typical recipe very famous in Bengal & Bangladesh. It’s like a kofta curry of fish. Super combo with steamed rice.

What do you need to make Chital Maacher Muitha


Chitol Maach flesh (you can bring the fish pieces and remove all the bones)
1 tbsp curd
1 big potato boiled & mashed
2 tbsp onion paste
1 onion finely chopped
1 tsp ginger paste
2 green chilis slit
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/4 tsp chili powder
1 bay leaf
1 Cinnamon stick
2-3 Green Cardamom
2-3 Cloves
Pinch of sugar
Salt as per taste
Refined oil

How to make Chitol Maacher Muitha

This preparation can be done in 2 stages. First we will prepare the fish coftas and then we will make the gravy.

To make the koftas, first of all wash the fish pieces and remove all bones. 
Mash them in a bowl. 
Now add mashed boiled potatoes.
Add salt, onion paste, turmeric powder, ginger & garlic paste.
You can add chopped coriander leaves (optional).
Mix them all well and make a dough.
Now make small balls.
Heat enough oil in a pan to deep fry the koftas.
Fry them gradually & carefully, so that they don’t break.
Keep them aside and let’s prepare the gravy.

Heat oil in a pan. Take 2-3 tsp refined oil.
You can use ghee or butter as well, if you like to do some experiment. I prefer to use oil only.
Anyway, add bay leaf, cinamon, cardamom & clove to hot oil.
Stir them for 1 min. let the aroma of masalas start coming.
Now add the chopped onions & green chilis.
Add little salt & turmeric powder.
In medium heat fry the onions till they turn brown in color.

Then add remaining ginger & garlic paste.
Also add the curd. You can take the curd in a cup, add little water & make it uniform.
Add chili powder & pinch of sugar.
Mix them all together properly.
When the curd start loosing oil, add little water and mix them all.
Cook for 2 – 3 min. Then add the fish balls to the gravy.
Cover the lid of the pan and cook for next 5 min.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

Lovely & spicy chitol maacher muitha is ready to serve. You can add fried potato cubes also to that curry.
